What Is a Hot Water Heater Strap? (Earthquake Strap)

In July 2019, Las Vegas was hit with an earthquake felt around the Valley. Homes and businesses shook as residents waited for the seismic energy to pass. When your home is shaking, the last thing that you’ll want to be worrying about is your water heater. Hot water heater straps can keep your unit secure to minimize damage and protect your family during a natural disaster.

These straps are also known as earthquake straps or restraints. Without them, your water heater could fall over and cause both water damage and an electrical fire that could put you and your loved ones at risk should you become trapped in your home during an earthquake. It’s best to be prepared for the worst and install the straps at the same time that you put in your new hot water heater.

Can a Homeowner Install a Water Heater in Nevada?

In Nevada, a homeowner may install a water heater themselves as long as the home is their primary residence. For any rental properties or secondary homes, a contractor must be the one to acquire the permit for the water heater installation. There are many strict electrical and plumbing rules regarding water heaters, so it may be in your best interest to hire an expert plumbing technician to take care of installing the unit that you have selected for your home. The person you work with should have a comprehensive knowledge of local guidelines and be able to install the water heater for you properly.

Are Water Heater Straps Required in Nevada?

Water heater straps are indeed required by the state of Nevada. In fact, water heaters must be restrained with double straps within 1 foot of the wall stud. These should be put in place around the heater and then connected to the unit’s frame. One strap should be installed within the upper one-third of the heater, and the other one should be fastened in the lower one-third. You should allow at least 4 inches between the control knobs and the lower strap.

Installing a new hot water heater is best left to the professionals to make sure the job’s done right the first time. Working with an expert can save you time and money, and you’ll be able to avoid the risk that you accidentally damage your water heater or wall during the installation process. You’ll also have the peace of mind in knowing that, in the event of an emergency, your straps will do their jobs properly.
